Code of Conduct

Burnaby Mountain Mantas Swimmers Code of Conduct

All swimmers agree to:

Part A: Respect

  • Respect and compete by the BCSSA rules and resolve conflicts without resorting to hostility or violence.
  • Demonstrate the spirit of sportsmanship, sport leadership, and ethical conduct
  • Demonstrate respect to individuals regardless of body type, physical characteristics, athletic ability, age, ancestry, colour, race, citizenship, ethnic origin, place of origin, creed, disability, family status, marital status, gender identity, gender expression, sex, and sexual orientation.  This includes all teammates, opponents, pool staff, volunteers, coaches and officials.
  • Accept responsibility for their actions and behaviour.

Part B: Behaviour

  • Refrain from any behaviour that constitutes harassment, where harassment is defined as comment or conduct directed towards an individual or group, which is offensive, abusive, racist, sexist, degrading, or malicious. Types of behaviour that constitute harassment include, but are not limited to:
    • Written or verbal abuse, threats, or outbursts
    • The display of visual material which is offensive or which one ought to know is offensive in the circumstances
    • Unwelcome remarks, jokes, comments, innuendo, or taunts
    • Leering or other suggestive or obscene gestures 
    • Condescending or patronizing behaviour which is intended to undermine self esteem, diminish performance or adversely affect working conditions 
    • Practical jokes which cause awkwardness or embarrassment, endanger a person’s safety, or negatively affect performance
  • Refrain from any activity that constitutes hazing.  Hazing is defined as “Any potentially humiliating, degrading, abusive, or dangerous activity expected of a junior-ranking athlete by a more senior teammate, which does not contribute to either athlete’s positive development, but is required to be accepted as part of a team, regardless of the junior-ranking athlete’s willingness to participate. 
  • Refrain from any behaviour that constitutes violence, where violence is defined as the exercise of physical force by a person against another person that causes or could cause physical injury.  
  • Refrain from any behaviour that constitutes sexual harassment, where sexual harassment is defined as unwelcome sexual comments and sexual advances, requests for sexual favours, or conduct of a sexual nature.

Part C: Substances

  • Abstain from the use of performance-enhancing drugs or methods.
  • Abstain from alcohol use or non-medical drug use during any of the following scenarios:
    • Before attending or during any Mantas practice
    • Before attending or during any swimming competition
    • Before attending or during any Mantas-sponsored activities, which includes but is not limited to:
      • Annual sleepover party
      • Annual skating event
      • Annual kickoff event
      • Mantas team socials
      • Mantas team picnics
    • During any part of an out-of-town swim competition, including but not limited to:
      • At the competition site
      • At a restaurant or bar
      • At the location of residence during the competition, such as the hotel, campground, or another person’s home
      • After competition ends, but before having arrived home from the competition.  

Part D: COVID-19

  • Obey all current  provincial health orders
  • Respect the decisions of any volunteer, coach, official or pool staff in terms of COVID-19 protocols.

Code of Conduct Violations

Any code of conduct violation will be reviewed by the executive board and disciplinary action will be made.  The executive board holds the right to remove a member from the club for a code of conduct violation.

  • Maintain self-control at all times.
  • Demonstrate respect to individuals regardless of body type, physical characteristics, age, ancestry, colour, race, citizenship, ethnic origin, place of origin, creed, disability, family status, marital status, gender identity, political views, personal beliefs, gender expression, sex, and sexual orientation.  This includes other parents, athletes, opponents, pool staff, volunteers, coaches and officials.
  • Offer praise for competing fairly and trying hard.
  • Do not yell at, or ridicule your child for making a mistake or for losing at a competition.

  • Refrain from any behaviour which constitutes harassment, where harassment is defined as comment or conduct directed towards an individual or group, which is offensive, abusive, racist, sexist, degrading, or malicious. Types of behaviour that constitute harassment include, but are not limited to:
    • Written or verbal abuse, threats, rude language, or outbursts
    • The display of visual material which is offensive or which one ought to know is offensive in the circumstances
    • Unwelcome remarks, jokes, comments, innuendo, or taunts
    • Leering or other suggestive or obscene gestures 
    • Condescending or patronizing behaviour 
    • Practical jokes which cause awkwardness or embarrassment, endanger a person’s safety, or negatively affect performance
  • Refrain from any behaviour that constitutes violence, where violence is defined as the exercise of physical force by a person against another person that causes or could cause physical injury.  This includes actual violence and threats or suggestions of violence.  

Part C: COVID-19

  • Obey all current  provincial health orders.
  • Respect the decisions of any volunteer, coach, official or pool staff in terms of COVID-19 protocols.
  • Show respect to other parents by following all current club mandated covid-19 rules and policies at all times.  

Code of Conduct Violations
